The goal of the case study was to create a luminaire which would spread indirect light for the environment, creating a mood effect while doing so. Starting with very elementary shapes, the main shape was defined to be a tapered cuboid with the narrow side towards the bottom. This would allow the main part of the illumination to be directed upwards. Further sketching developed the shape into a three dimensional form. The side covers were introduced, featuring a grid pattern reminiscent of the ventilation grids from Husqvarna products, which would allow a smaller amount of dappled light to be emitted horizontally.
Sketches (Adobe Photoshop) from the form exploration, going from structural to formal concepts, beginning with primitive forms and proceeding with further iterations. To ensure that the design work was on the right track with regards to light distribution as well as proportions and dimensions, a simple prototype was constructed out of paper.

Exploded view of final design
The idea for the design of the front cover was to keep a single curved surface that would form the basic structure of the luminaire, and which would be the most prominent part of the design. Beech was chosen as a natural material to use, and steam bending this wooden piece would allow for shaping the front cover. The hole placed at the bottom allows for light to be spread downwards, and also for the power cable to fall in a natural and unobstructive way. The passage of time will inevitably change the look of the wooden material; it might for example change color etc. However, I believe that this is something that only increases the natural look and feel of the product, which is something that enhances the expression of the luminaire.
